Robert’s Rules: Purpose
“to enable assemblies of any size, with due regard for every member’s opinion, to arrive at the general will on the maximum number of questions of varying complexity in a minimum amount of time and under all kinds of internal climate ranging from total harmony to hardened or impassioned division on opinion.” Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised, 11th edition

Robert’s Rules: Motions
Anything to be considered (voted on) by Senate will be in the form of a motion. Process: Must be brought to the body Must be seconded Then in most cases debate may occur All remarks should be directed to the chair Once debate concluded then a vote takes place Informational items not to be voted on are reported to Senate also, but are not motions.

Key actions (all in the form of a motion) available during debate: Amend the motion Divide the motion Table the motion /postpone until [date] Postpone indefinitely (kill the main motion) Call the question (close debate)
