The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is a £1.5 billion fund announced by the UK Government in late 2015 to support cutting-edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries.

Newton Fund Work with partner countries (India, Latin America, Brazil) strengthening partner country science and innovation capacity and unlocking further funding to support this work. Part of the UK’s official development assistance (ODA).

Scholarship to visit Cardiff University. Between 2 and 6 months – up to £25,000. Focused workshop funds, to build relationships and formulate shared research agendas – up to £10,000. Small project funds up to £50,000. Money to be spent by 31st of July 2018. Deadline – asap.

Eligibility Does the project address the economic development and welfare of the country in question? Is there a development need that this project or activity will address? How would this project or activity be applied in the country? What would the impact of my project or activity be, and who would benefit? How does my project or activity contribute to sustainable development? Would this lead to a reduction in poverty in a developing country? Money to be spent by 31st of July 2018. Deadline – asap.

Africa Prize RAE Encourages talented sub- Saharan African engineers, from all disciplines, to develop local solutions to challenges in their communities.

Africa Prize RAE The winner will receive £25,000, and three runners-up with receive £10,000 each. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must have developed (or co-developed), or be in the process of developing (or co-developing) a new technological innovation. Applicants should have the ambition to take a leading role in creating a new business to commercialise this innovation. The submission deadline is 4pm GMT on 23 July 2018.

Frontiers of Engineering for Development RAE
Seed cord funding – up to £20,000 Eligibility Criteria The two primary applicants must have been participants from the most recent Frontiers of Engineering for Development Symposium. The project must be interdisciplinary The lead applicant must be hosted in a UK university The Circular Economy, London, UK, 30 April - 2 May 2018 Nominate yourself online and check eligibility Symposium: Be 5-20 years post-doctorate, or have equivalent experience in industry Have an established interest in engineering for international development purposes, or be keen to apply existing work to combat global challenges Have the potential to be a future leader of the engineering community The project must comply with the ODA requirements The project must be interdisciplinary Pre-existing collaborations are NOT eligible The lead applicant must be hosted in a UK university
