2 Election of 1960 Kennedy won - Televised debates demonstrated the importance of appearance and the impact of television on politics (TV watchers said Kennedy won and Radio listeners said Nixon won)

3 New Frontier Kennedy’s domestic agenda – increase aid to education, provide health insurance to elderly, Department of Urban Affairs, help migrant workers

4 Warren Court Earl Warren – very liberal – Brown v. Board (integration), Mapp v. Ohio (illegal evidence), Miranda v. Arizona (Miranda rights), Gideon v. Wainwright (attorney), Engel v. Vitale (no prayer), much more!!

5 Flexible Response Plan to use special forces, Green Berets, to wage guerrilla warfare to fight instead of relying on nuclear weapons

6 Alliance for Progress Cooperative aid projects with Latin American governments to discourage communism – US gave $20 billion to help Latin American schools, housing, health care, etc

7 Peace Corps Organization that sends young Americans to perform humanitarian services in developing nations – one of Kennedy’s enduring legacies

8 Space Race Vying for dominance of space in order to enhance competitive positions on Earth – JFK’s Goal was a man on the moon (finally in 1969)

9 Bay of Pigs Attempt of Cuban exiles trained by USA to overthrow Fidel Castro’s government – embarrassing to CIA when the attempt failed

10 Berlin Wall Built in 1961 when Khrushchev wanted to stop Germans from moving to West Berlin – symbol of Cold War until 1989

11 Cuban Missile Crisis Tense situation when the Soviet Union put missiles in Cuba (pointed at the USA) – the US had missiles in Turkey (pointed at the Soviet Union) – both sets of missiles were removed and the US promised not to invade Cuba

12 Kennedy’s Assassination
November 22, 1963 – Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas Texas – Warren Commission investigated a conspiracy, but found none (let me give you some of the conspiracy theories – CIA, Johnson, Jackie Kennedy, the mob)

13 Great Society Johnson’s domestic plan – passed Civil Rights Act, Medicare, Medicaid, Head Start , Elementary and Secondary Education Act, and Housing of Urban Development Act

14 VISTA Volunteers in Service to America – domestic Peace Corps – young people in US to work in poor neighborhoods and rural areas to overcome poverty

15 Medicare and Medicaid Comprehensive health insurance program for all elderly people – financed through Social Security Funded by federal and state gov’t – provides health and medical assistance to low-income families

16 Head Start Funded a preschool program for the disadvantaged

17 Elementary and Secondary Education Act
Targeted aid to students and funded related activities such as adult education and education counseling

18 Housing and Urban Development Act
Established new housing subsidy programs and made federal loans and public housing grants easier to obtain
