What’s New?/Helpful Hints & Reminders Student Test Engagement Test Administration Training Creating Test Sessions Views – Student/Proctor Accommodations/Tests Guidelines for MAP Growth Retesting Let’s Debrief

5 MAP Roles & Responsibilities
Roles and Responsibilities Proctor Create testing sessions in advance Prepare computers before testing sessions Prepare students for tests Start and supervise tests Resolve technical difficulties during tests Administrator View MAP reports at school, class, and student levels Guide staff in using data effectively Evaluate effectiveness and make adjustments based on test results Instructor View MAP reports at class and student levels Adjust instruction based on test results Use instructional resources to tailor instruction for individual students

6 What’s New to MAP Growth?
Name change: MAP to MAP Growth, rebranding of NWEA Student Introduction to MAP Testing has been updated (June2017) Technology New app for iPad (requires iOS 8.0+): allows students to take MAP Growth tests on an iPad or iPad mini. Chromebooks: a new app facilitates secure MAP Growth testing Window Desktops: lockdown browser update Mac and iPad: Support for Safari 9 and iOS 9 Test Navigation Keyboard Shortcuts Student Introduction to MAP Testing Test Navigation Keyboard Shortcuts

7 Student Assessment Engagement
Why? What will it look like? How does it work?

8 Disengagement & Rapid-Guessing Behavior
Students who have become disengaged tend to answer questions very rapidly Data on response time can be objectively and unobtrusively collected by the computer. The method for detecting disengaged test taking is based on the amount of time test takers spend on test items

9 The Impact of Disengagement
Typically leads to a score that under-estimates what the student knows and can do Validity (i.e., trustworthiness) of the score is diminished The effects are: Misleading information for educators about growth and what the student is ready to learn Students may be placed in instructional programs they don’t need Time & resources are wasted

10 How Often Does Disengaged Test Taking Occur?

11 Multiple Factors Influence Student Engagement
Consider a test event as a student seeing a series of items in a particular context. Engagement can be affected by characteristics of the student, the items, and the context in which the items appear. Student factors: grade, gender, etc. Item factors: test subject, amount of reading, mental taxation, presence of a table, figure or graph. Context factors: test stakes, item position, time of day, heat/cold, noise distractions, illness Disengaged test taking almost always leads to negatively distorted (i.e., lower) scores But it can affect growth scores in two ways. It can exaggerate a growth score It can reduce a growth score

12 Correlation to Social Emotional Student Engagement
If a student is generally disengaged from school, they will likely also disengage from a test If a student disengages from a test, they may be generally disengaged from school, or the disengagement could be episodic, for example, due to illness or a bad day

13 Normal Engaged Growth

14 Disengagement at BOY Exaggerates Growth

15 Disengagement at MOY & EOY Reduces Growth

16 How adaptive tests work
Item Difficulty (RIT) 240 230 220 210 200 190 180 250 Items Right answer Wrong answer Standard error

17 When a student rapid-guesses on any adaptive test today
Item Difficulty (RIT) 240 230 220 210 200 190 180 250 Items Student begins rapid guessing Student continues rapid guessing Student re-engages Student re-engages Noise created: number of items rapid-guessed X 2

18 Fall 2017: RIT Level Locks and Proctor Notification
Item Difficulty (RIT) 240 230 220 210 200 190 180 250 Items Student re-engages at correct RIT level RIT level locks to student ability after 3rd rapid guess AND proctor is notified

21 Student Assessment Engagement
What will it look like? 1 student has disengaged!

22 Student Assessment Engagement
What will it look like? 1 student has disengaged! Student will be able to continue working unless the Proctor intervenes

23 Student Assessment Engagement
The Proctor has intervened. All students are engaged. Test data being generated has maximum precision.

24 What Can Proctors Do? Understand the importance of student engagement in getting valid scores. Administer MAP in a setting that is free from construct-irrelevant factors. Monitor students during a test event. Intervene effectively with students who trigger a proctor notification. Emphasize to students the importance of their giving their best effort on MAP. Send the message that this is important. Invite students to develop growth goals, which will enhance student feelings of ownership over their growth.

25 How long do the MAP Growth tests take?
MAP Growth 3rd – 12th MAP Growth Math, Reading and Language Usage average 55 minutes each. Please understand your first test event (BOY) can run longer as new teachers and students are familiarizing themselves with the MAP Growth test administration process. Grades 4-8 will test in Science as well. The Science test will average 55 minutes. Again please understand the BOY test event can run longer due to unfamiliarity with MAP Growth. MAP Growth K-2 MAP Growth K-2 Reading averages approximately 25 minutes MAP Growth K-2 Math averages approximately 25 minutes

26 MAP Growth Helpful Hints/Reminders

27 MAP Helpful Hints/Reminders (cont.)
All teachers that have students rostered to them will be uploaded into MAP as ‘Instructors’ Teachers must login to their accounts in order to view reports Students can only take one test at a time Students can take more than one test per testing session as long as the first test has been completed Proctors can only login to one testing session at a time Write Testing Session Name and Password on the board for all students to see Test Session Names cannot be the same from administration to administration You can use the same name but with a variation (add numbers, special characters, etc.) Deleting testing sessions does not delete student results Testing sessions control the testing and does not store/hold test responses Students can only test one time per subject DO NOT TERMINATE STUDENTS’ TESTS WITHOUT NOTIFYING THE TESTING OFFICE Please keep a log of terminated tests

29 3 Steps for Testing Students
Select a class or group of students to test by creating a testing session Testing session controls which students to test, which tests they will take, and the testing experience Students sign in through the NWEA Secure Browser Supervise students on the proctor computer Have students utilize the before they test

30 Creating Testing Sessions
Once you log in, select ‘Manage Test Sessions’ Select ‘Find Students to Test’, ‘Test My Class’, or ‘Saved Testing Sessions’ Find Students to Test: allows the proctor to create testing sessions for students that are not only rostered to the proctor. This is helpful for make ups. Test My Class: allows the proctor to create testing sessions for students that are only rostered to the proctor; a session name will already be generated by MAP (if the proctor want to change the session name, that can be done when exiting the testing sessions) Saved Testing Sessions: allows you to find the session(s) that you created as well as anyone in the district provided that it was saved. Find Students to Test Search for students by using the drop down menus under the ‘Student Search’ tab and/or Enter the student name to find one student and/or enter the Student ID Select You will see a list of students found. You either add all the students by clicking the box next “Last Name” or add student individually by checking the box next to the student name. You can always add more students to this list, by going back to the ‘Student Search’ Follow the steps above to add more students

31 Creating Testing Sessions (cont.)
Select or Test Now: allows you to test the students now Save Session: allows you to save the session for a later time If you select ‘Save Session’, you will need to name your Testing Session Remember that your students will need to type the Testing Session when they log in Be cautious of long names, special characters, etc. Remember younger students will need to be able to type it in correctly in order to test. Once you name your session, select You will be able to view your Testing Session under the Saved Testing Sessions in Manage Testing Sessions If you would like to view other testing sessions created by other Proctors, clear the name in the created by column. You can leave it blank (select ‘All Proctors’) or type in a specific name You will then be able to view all Saved Testing Sessions throughout the district Any Proctor can view and use any Saved Testing Session

32 Assigning Tests Assigning Tests
To assign the same test to all students, select the box next to “Last Name” If some students will be taking a different test, uncheck the box(es) next to those student(s) Select Select the Test Name from the drop down menu Select which test you want Select once you have chosen your test

33 Student Computer View On the student’s computer, students type in ‘Test Session Name’ and ‘Password’ Student selects

34 Student Computer View Student selects their name from drop down menu or types their name If the test was already pre-assigned, it will automatically show up under ‘Select a Test’ If not, student will need to select the test from the drop down menu (not recommended at all) Student selects

35 Student Computer View Student will select either or
Student will see the ‘Is this correct?’ page Student will select either or

36 Student Computer View Student’s computer will show that it is waiting for the proctor to confirm

37 Student Computer View After proctor has confirmed the student, the student’s computer will show that the test has been confirmed Student will select

38 Proctor Computer View Summary Information List of Students
Session Name is generated by MAP or you can create your own (Recommended) Session Password is automatically generated and is only valid when the session is active

39 Proctor Computer View (cont.)
Students that show as ‘To Be Confirmed’ are waiting to take the test Select ‘Confirm Now’. Remember to only confirm 5-6 students at a time Remember it is always “Best to Refresh”

40 Assigning Accommodations
Select the box next to the student that you want to assign accommodations This process must be done student-by- student Select the student Highlight, by holding down the Ctrl key as you select(use the mouse) the accommodation(s) that the student needs Select Accommodations Column will now reflect ‘Yes’ Please note: -Accommodations are not currently embedded -Accommodations Logs need to be kept -Accommodations are tracked based on test sessions, not students (this process must be repeated if students are in a different test session) -Oral Accommodation for Reading will bias results.

41 Test and Item Aids Test aids: tools that are available throughout the test; students can access these tools in the NWEA testing platform and use them at their own discretion. Highlighter: test aid is available for students to highlight desired text to make it easier to read. Note: The highlighter and eraser tool currently cannot be used by keyboard navigation alone, although they can be toggled on and off by keyboard shortcuts. Item aids: tools that appear only with specific test items, rather than throughout the entire test, depending on the nature of the test item. Calculator: item aid is embedded in relevant items so students can use it for mathematical computations.

42 Interrupting Tests Pause and Resume
30 minutes or less; if more than 30 minutes the test will automatically stop and become suspended Student must resume on the same computer Select the student by checking the box next to the name Select the action by choosing ‘Pause’ from the drop down menu Student’s computer will show that the test is paused Once student is ready, select the student from the Proctor computer and choose ‘Resume’ from the drop down menu Student’s computer will now let them ‘Resume’ the test

43 Interrupting Tests (cont.)
Suspend and End Longer than 30 minutes or will continue at a later day/time From the Proctor computer, and select ‘Testing’ from the drop down menu Once student(s) are selected, and choose ‘Suspend’ from the drop down menu You will need to confirm that you want to suspend the test Students’ status will now show as ‘Suspended’ Student’s computer will show that the test is stopped You will need to You can either or Terminate Cancel a test that was assigned by mistake Use caution, terminating a test eliminates any answers that were already given Students WILL NOT be able to restart the same time once it has been terminated Notification of terminated test must be made to the Testing Office

44 Saved Testing Sessions
Accessing Saved Testing Sessions From Manage Testing Sessions, select ‘Saved Testing Session’ to find the testing session that you saved Select Students’ status will show as ‘Awaiting Student’ regardless if their test was previously suspended This is normal and indicates that MAP Growth is ready for students to sign in You will need to confirm the student(s) by selecting

45 Make-Up Testing Creating Make-Up Testing Sessions
From Manage Testing Sessions, select to search for students Search for students by using the drop down menus under the ‘Test History Search’ Select the test from the drop down menu Select the testing status You can choose ‘Not Yet Tested’ and/or ‘Suspended Test’ Select the Tests Taken You can leave it with the default ‘Current Term’ Select Even though you searched by test name, you still need to assign a test as you normally do for setting up testing You can add more students to this list by changing your search (different tests, different grade, etc.) or find individual students through the ‘Student Search’ tab Select or
