Endocrine System- network of tissues and organs that release chemicals that control certain body functions Hormones- chemical messengers in the body

The Hormones and Their Functions
A. Pituitary Gland- “Master Gland” Located at the base of the brain -regulates other endocrine glands -regulates growth and development -regulates body temperature

B. Thyroid Gland- located in throat near larnyx, largest of the glands
-produces thyroxin- regulates metabolism

C. Parathyroid- located within the Thyroid Gland
-regulates certain minerals in the body (calcium and phosphorus)

D. Adrenal Glands- located on top of the
kidneys -produces Epinephrine- prepares your body for emergency, fight or flight, response muscle tone increases and heart beat strength -produces cortisone- control’s body’s use of salt and fat

E. Pancreas- located below the stomach and above small intestines
-produces digestive juices and insulin, needed for the body to break down sugar

F. Ovaries- female reproductive glands, located in pelvic area
-produce estrogen, which stimulates secondary sex characteristics

G. Testes- male reproductive glands, located in the groin area
-produce testosterone, stimulates male secondary sex characteristics

Endocrine System Disorders
Diabetes- not enough insulin being produced, or doesn’t work right Type 1 (Juvenile Diabetes)- usually diagnosed in children and young adults (usually genetic) Type 2 (Adult Onset)- most common form, becoming epidemic in children because of obesity

Goiter- when thyroid enlarges, causing a lump in the neck
Goiter- when thyroid enlarges, causing a lump in the neck. Caused by not enough iodine in diet, treated with supplements or iodized salt.

Growth Extremes- to much growth hormone from pituitary gland, causing a conditioned called Gigantism (very large person) -too little hormone causes Dwarfism (a very small person)
