Mission The mission of the Library Media Center is to teach students to be effective users of information and to encourage and prepare students to be life long learners.

This Orientation will inform you about:
What is expected of you when you visit Procedures used in the Media Center How to locate materials

The Media Center Provides:
A quiet, attractive and friendly place for schoolwork Books for assignments and personal information needs Help and resources for assignments and personal information needs Curriculum support and research opportunities to classes Access to computers for online research and writing

Entering the Media Center:
The main entrance will be used for entering and exiting The side entrance will remain locked Present a pass to the Media Specialist upon entering Sign in at the circulation desk, unless you are visiting with your class

How You Will Use the Media Center:
As an individual for research related to school assignments and/or leisure reading In small groups (4 or less students) for special projects As a class for specific instruction that calls for resources located in the Media Center

Library Media Center Passes:
A library pass signed by a teacher including the student name/s, date and time is needed to enter during class Only four students per class may be sent from each classroom at a time. Students must know the nature of their business in the Media Center Make sure you sign in at the circulation desk after entering

When Can You Use the Media Center:
During class with a valid pass During a class visit accompanied by your teacher During your lunch period with a schedule

What You Can Do To Make This a Better Place for Everyone:
Enter in an orderly manner and lower your voice Have a valid pass to come to the library during class time Speak quietly and behave in a manner consistent with study Keep food, candy, gum and drinks out of the library Check out all items you take from the library Follow school rules

Consequences: Verbal warning Change of seating
Private conference and/or mediation Loss of Media Center privileges for x period of time Parent contact Disciplinary referral

Circulation Policy: Regular book checkout period is two weeks
Back issues of magazines may be checked out for 3 days. Current issues do not circulate Students are responsible for returning or renewing books on time and returning them in good condition Damaged books will be assessed fines. You may be charged a replacement cost if you return a book in a condition which is unusable Students with overdue books are considered to have an obligation. Overdue notices will be sent home Seniors with overdue books after April 30th will be charged a fine

Call # Prefixes and Book Collections:
F or Fic (Fiction) - stories written from a writer’s imagination and arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s last name PB F or PB Fic (Paperback Fiction) - same as fiction, but less expensive to make Numbers (Non Fiction) – informational books arranged by the Dewey Decimal System R or Ref (Reference) – non-circulating books commonly used for research 92, B or 921 (Biography) – a written history of a person’s life

Computer Access All students must use their personal username and password to have computer access. Memorizing this information would be very beneficial. Use the same username/password for: Accelerated Reader & Naviance

Technology Acceptable Uses:
The computers are to be used for educational purposes only. You Tube, games, music or musical videos are strictly prohibited in the Media Center when they do not pertain to school work. The following types of access are considered to be appropriate uses: Participation in collaborative efforts Accessing real-time data Accessing unique resources Publishing information and resources Conducting research Communicating broadly and effectively (CMSD Website - Internet Acceptable Use Policy(AUP) 2006)

Please Practice Library Etiquette in the Following Manner:
Do not reshelf the books, please place them on the library carts or tables after you have taken them off the shelves Do not rearrange the tables or chairs Do not sit on the tables Only one student per seat Log off the computer before you leave When you are finished using the library, please clean up any trash and push in your chair
