what do you think twitter is?
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications.

personal learning network
“it is one of many tools that we have at our disposal. I do not see it replacing any of the others we use nor do I see the positive impact upon learning being exclusive to Twitter”

A metaphor: flowing river
1. Sit on the bank, relax in the sun and observe (graze) the information flow 2. Put on your trunks and jump into the information flow However, when you are away, it still flows …

uses in teaching and learning
1. News updates (asynchronous) Instructor (academic) centred Traditional model – upload to Moodle (forum) or students Twitter model – reduces the number of steps in the process (especially if you update twitter from your phone / text). Will need to include support material 2. Class back channel (synchronous) Student centred Traditional model – create a forum on Moodle encourage to use Twitter model – overcomes perceived ownership mis-match, is also synchronous / in real time. Need to agree on a tag convention, and include support material 3. Personal reflective log Traditional model – capture initial ideas on paper and transfer later Twitter model – from your phone make short updates, upload photos etc.,
