1 Temperate Travels Temperate Deciduous Forest
Ellie Diederich, Cameron Wittman, Faye Patton Temperate Travels

2 Deciduous forests are located between in the temperate zone above the tropical
forests and above the coniferous forests. Most deciduous forests can be found in Eastern North America around N, and in Europe and Asia around N.

3 Characteristics Four distinct seasons Soil is rich in nutrients
Long and warm growing season Abundant Moisture Five leaf zones: Tree Stratum Zone, ft, oak, beech, maple, hickory, elm, walnut Sapling Zone, young and short trees Shrub Zone, rhododendrons, azaleas, huckleberries Herb Zone, short herbal plants Ground Zone, lichen, club mosses, true mosses

4 Climate Temperate deciduous forests are the second rainiest forests
behind rainforests and receive 30-60 inches of rain per year. The average temperature is 50 degrees (F) but will often go below freezing in the winter Months.

5 Fun Facts Many of the trees located in temperate deciduous forests contain sap which prevents their roots from freezing in winter Most animals in this biome are camouflaged with the ground to escape predators Deciduous is Latin for “fall off” – the leaves fall off in autumn and winter then grow back in the spring

6 Plant and Animal Life Temperate deciduous forests are known for
vibrant maple, oak, birch, beech, magnolia, sweet gum trees, and some conifers. On the forest floor, you can find beautiful wildflowers, ferns, mosses, and lichen. Animals common to this biome include: the black bear, coyotes, bald eagles, chipmunks, squirrels, and deer. Because of the ever changing seasons in this biome many plants and animals have had to adapt to the conditions. For example, the trees cannot get enough water from the ground in the winter so they must drop their leaves. Also, the birds inhabiting the area must migrate South to find a warmer climate and more available food.

7 Environmental Issue: Climate Change
Affects the growth and productivity of the forests Warming and higher carbon dioxide levels cause growing seasons to extend longer than normal and can cause droughts Warmer weather can also increase insect infestations and cause destructive storms Wild fires are a greater threat

8 Tourism The best times to visit are during fall, when the leaves are vibrant and changing colors, and spring, when leaves are just starting to bloom. DISCLAIMER: Be prepared for rain and cool weather. What to do: The temperate deciduous forests have many activities for the entire family: ziplining, fishing, camping, and hiking.
