2 Why It's Important You become an active member of the community.
Brings you visibility. Informs your research and career decision making. Makes you a member of the “club”. Professional service is money in the bank. Community members become your advocates. The benefit of the doubt may go your way in papers, grants. It's expected of you. Give to your research community and society.

3 Conferences Regular attendance at ICRA or a specialty conference.
Makes you visible, and accepted as a co-researcher. People learn about you, and vice versa. Calibrates your own efforts, helps identify trends. Conference paper reviewing Do a good job of reviewing papers you receive. Join a conference program committee or conference editorial board. Running conferences Organizing committee roles for more junior members: local arrangements. Other roles: publicity chair, publications chair, workshops chair. Senior roles: general chair, program chair. Examples: ICRA, RSS

4 Journals Reviewing journal papers. Impress by doing a good job.
Journal editorial boards. Become an associate editor eventually.

5 Panels NSF Panels. Must have received an NSF grant to be invited.
Diligent reviewing will impress other panel members and the NSF program manager You will see what makes (or not) a successful grant. Other Panels. Other federal government agencies. State or local agencies.

6 Technical Committees Join a RAS technical committee (or two) in your interest area. Become a co-organizer of a technical committee.

7 Student Organizations
Join the RAS student group. Become a Student Activities Committee co-chair. High visibility position. Join a U of U student group. GradSAC or RoboUtes. Will look good on your resume.

8 Outreach Outreach is increasingly important for NSF grants.
All grants need some outreach plan. Outreach involves K-12 students, or underrepresented minorities. FIRST activities are a natural fit to robotics outreach.
