1 OTHER SENSES SMELL TASTE SKIN & BODY SENSES

2 CHEMICAL SENSES Smell Taste Because they sense Molecules

3 TASTE 4 Taste Qualities Sweet Sour Salty Bitter
*Recent studies – looking at 5th quality being savory meaty taste - umami Babies – natural sweet for survival Avoid sour and bitter -- poisons

4 TASTE Elderly Receptors—Located on Tongue
Receptors that Are Burned will regenerate Inherit Certain Taste Qualities Smokers – Receptors are Damaged

5 TASTERS Supertasters—have a lot of taste receptors
---Believed to be poison detectors in ancient civilizations. ---Less likely to be alcohols –due to bitter taste Nontasters– taste with less intensity

6 FOOD CRAVINGS In your notebook write down your top 10 foods that you crave. What sounds good to you right now??? Men crave protein Women crave sweets & fat

7 SMELL Humans sense of smell is not that good. Dogs smell 7X what we do. Receptor neurons in nostril Olfactory Nerve– sends odors to brain Able to adapt to smells—sensory adaptation.

8 The Skin Senses Touch Combo of: Pressure Temperature Pain Importance
Infants Elderly

9 PRESSURE Root of hair is where sensory receptors are located.
Hair cells fire when touched. Different parts of your body are more sensitive to pressure than others.

10 TEMPERATURE Right below skin
When cold & warm are felt at the same time a HOT sensation is felt! Adapt

11 PAIN Tells us something is wrong Adaptive—make us react
More Pain Receptors—more sensitive Amputation Phantom pain

12 Pain & the Gate Control Theory
Pain message from the body travels on two separate sets of nerve fibers The fibers carrying pain messages contain pain gates, which are open when we experience pain. The non-pain fibers can actually close the pain gates. This is why rubbing the hurt area or icing it can partially block the sensations of pain. The brain plays a huge part Example: athletes may get hurt, but their level of focus & adrenal helps them block out the pain for awhile.

13 Comparing Points of View
Compare & Contrast your own reactions to temperature, pressure and pain List stimuli Ex. Receiving a shot of novocaine What is your reaction to the intensity of the discomfort?

14 Body Senses Kinesthetic sense- the system that senses the position & movement of your individual body. Joints, tendons, muscles Vestibular sense- the system for sensing body orientation & balance. Located in your inner ear When you get “dizzy” you are messing w/ your vestibular sense Physically Upright

15 VESTIBULAR SENSE
