The Crisis of Remediation
Each year about 2.5 million college freshman take math and English placement exams. More than half learn they face required remediation. In % of MN high school graduates entering college required remediation. Only about 22% of students that undertake remediation complete college and receive a degree. What was liked about EdReady
Video and Animation was helpful Liked how the video showed the problems of how to do it I have ADHD and so I did get distracted a bit during the assessments but really liked the videos – the animation, color was good, the length, the problem review It’s stuff that I would need for my future career; its practical It shows where you are at and what you need to work on It’s helpful – reviews and shows what to work on Data gathered through student interviews upon completing the assessment and viewing tutorials.

What was liked about EdReady
It explains things; it’s easy to understand; explains why things are the way they are I have a learning disability related to reading and writing and I like that it talks to you – the audio and animation – brings out the details in a slower format I liked that it showed me what I don’t know and hone in on what I need to know Liked that it kept things simple Data gathered through student interviews upon completing the assessment and viewing tutorials.

Harding High School – Risk for Graduation
Main Contacts for Group: Michael Houston, Math Teacher and Maureen Reueber, Teacher on Special Assignment Length of Time of Assessment and Review Materials: Time is good! (2) It took a while to take the assessment – review was good because it helped you go back to check what you did wrong. (2) Would you return to the tool on your own if you needed to meet a certain math test goal: Yes, I tried to get in at home but couldn’t get in. Yes, would help a lot, watching the videos increase understanding of what’s being asked. Yes, definitely – especially if it’d help on my ACT especially as it tells you your weaknesses. Demographics: Juniors (20) Females (13), Males (7) Unit Assessment Completed by Students: Arithmetic (17) Geometry (10) Statistics (6) Algebra part 1 (8) Algebra part 2 (3) Algebra part 3 (2) • The students were asked to work on the assessment and review modules every school day for 2 weeks. Randy and Michele helped the class of about 18 set up their accounts on day one. There were some challenges but everybody had an account by the end of the class time (40 minutes). Four students completed the assessment that first day. Three met the mastery cut-off (80%) and were not allowed to access the review modules. No students were able to view the videos since time ran out. • Randy and Michele returned a week later. There was a substitute teacher on this day. The students were easily distracted by talking with each other and using their smart phones. Most students had to be reminded to focus on the work at hand. One student had difficulty logging into her account even after several password changes (she was using the correct because the change would go to her in-box but the given passwords would never work). Data gathered through student interviews upon completing the assessment and viewing tutorials and admin report.

What would you tell others
What was liked about EdReady The challenges, wanting to spend more time working on project. Easy to follow and applies to different materials/math subjects. I like the test, your score and what you need to work and it’s right away. It’s non-threatening and you know right away what you need to work on. What would you tell others Try it – it helped me! Easy page to go to and that material is such that I enjoyed doing it. They should get into it because it tells them their weaknesses and your strong points too and what to study. Observations Online and blended learning can be used to help students access personalized learning, and real-time adaptation of learning through assessments EdReady prepares students for both “credit recovery” of high school units not earned and better preparation for college-level instruction. Students expressed that it would motivate them more if they were to get help with deciding on a career path and then know how math pertains to their career path. Such wrap-around student development resources and activities are available on the GPS LifePlan ( or /secondary)
