The Great Depression was one of the darkest eras in U.S. history because of what happened during it .

The start of the Great Depression in 1929.

3. What started the Great Depression
In 1929 the stock market crashed.
Economics debates were a factor in the Great Depression.
Drought and hurricanes in the southeast.
9,000 banks throughout the 1930s failed.
American economic policy with Europe.
Reduction in purchasing across the board.
The Great Depression was caused by a number of reasons.
The 1929 stock market crash basically started the era.
Too many economic debates and the economic policy between the U.S. and Europe.
Droughts and hurricanes in the southeast took a lot of money for repairs.
During the 1930's, 9,000 banks closed because they failed.
Reduction in purchasing across the board severely affected the crisis.

4. So why was it so bad?
Agricultural farms started to become less profitable.
Income was unevenly distributed.
Banks started to fail.
Most of it took place all over the United States.
It was bad because businesses  started to shut down.
Farms and the agricultural business were starting to lose profit.
Income was unevenly distributed because of the lack of organization.
Banks started to fail because of the excessive back-up.
It was bad because it took place all over the U.S. not just a specific place.

The Great Depression was so bad even kids went out to try and get jobs for their parents.

Some families were so poor and desperate that they even put up their own kids for sale.

7. What happened to people during the Great Depression
About a million Americans lost their source of income, effecting both middle and working class families.
Poverty raised substantially
The rich were barely effected.
The farmers were paid low prices from and were paid not to produce any surplus crops.
Drastic times called for drastic measures, having little to no money parents had to rent out rooms, grow crops, and do anything that would earn them money since they were jobless and they used the profits they earned to provide for their families. Struggling families had their young working for an extra income.

Riots and violence
Media was used to spread thought and opinions
Protesting and strikes
Racism
Money has the power to make one person go from happy to angry in an instant or as we say, 0 to 100 real quick. Mad at the government people started violent riots and people with a little bit more of a softer side started to protest and start strikes. In different work areas they were split into racial divisions and people who suffered were outraged, also a huge reason why there were riots and protesting.

9. Farmers and Grocers
This is a picture of a grocer's store after no one was able to buy because of the Great Depression and this pushed most farmers and shop owners to shut down business due to the lack of money.

10. Programs created to help and relive
Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency in 1933 became known as the "New Deal"
His New Deal programs focused on Relief, Recover, and Reforming the stock market.
The Relief programs were - CCC, FERA, CWA, AAA, HOLC
The Recovery programs were - WPA, NRA, PWA, TVA, FSA
The Reform programs were- FDIC, SSA, REA, NYA
Most of the relief programs involved employing people and creating jobs for the jobless.
The recovery programs mainly focused on long-range recovery so this won't happen again in the future.
The reforming programs mainly focused in reshaping the economy and reforming the current abuses.
The Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) program was struck down in 1936 by Congress due to its unconstitutional tax regulations. Congress passed The Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act to pay the farmers for using soil conserving crops. President Roosevelt created the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) program in 1934 and to back that up, Congress created United States Housing Authority (USHA) to strengthen it. President Roosevelt mostly focused on the relief programs because he believed that the government was responsible for preventing mass hunger and starvation by managing and taking care of the economy.
