There are two different uses of apostrophes
1) For omission - when a letter or letters are left out of a word or words: We cannot go. = We can’t go. A change to the rule When a word is a plural (and ends in -s or –es) then you put an apostrophe after the noun: boys' coats ladies' books Insert the apostrophes in the following sentences to show plurals: The boys pencil lay on the desk next to the girls hat. My cousins hand was badly hurt when Pauls dog bit him. The teachers register lay on the headmasters desk. My fathers car was discovered in the thieves yard.
