1 SCINTILLATOR HARDWARE
DEWELOPMENT AND PLANS Short term LCDmu R&D project for NIU Alexandre Dyshkant, Kurt Francis for NICADD Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL 60115) 11/13/2018 Alexandre Dychkant / Arlington LC Workshop

2 GOAL NOTE: Comparative measurements of light output between long strip
made from cast and extruded scintillator using WLS and clear fibers as readout. GOAL NOTE: One general goal is that the test bench and hardware development be efficient and useful at the same time for both NIU scintillator-based projects, which are muons and digital hadron calorimeter. 11/13/2018 Alexandre Dychkant / Arlington LC Workshop

DESCRIPTION OF TEST SETUP Scintillating strips(details below), WLS fibers embedded into a groove. Optical connectors at strip ends, leading to clear fibers one photo detector at each end. 1st step; PMT output connected to picoAmmeter Keithley 6485 2nd step: PMT output connected to ADC in VME crate Software: LabView Measurements are to be performed with -radioactive source Sr-90, -cosmic rays (top & bottom scintillator as a trigger 11/13/2018 Alexandre Dychkant / Arlington LC Workshop

HARDWARE ALREADY IN PLACE Scintillating strips: Two KURARAY SCSN81 (cast scintillator) 0.93 x 4.73 x 224 cm³ - call it “narrow” 0.93 x 9.81 x 224 cm³ - call it “wide” (The plan is to place a single groove on the “narrow” and a Double groove on the “wide” strip). Two MINOS strips (extruded scintillator) 1.0 x 4.1 x 244 cm³ - these are coated and grooved WLS fibers – BCF92 (round 1.0 mm outer diameter). 11/13/2018 Alexandre Dychkant / Arlington LC Workshop

FIRST STEP OF HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT PicoAmmeter LabView Photo detectors Clear fibers Optical connectors Light tight box with strip and WLS fiber Sr-90 11/13/2018 Alexandre Dychkant / Arlington LC Workshop

Hardware we need in a relatively short term Clear fibers and protective tubes if fibers are not light tight. WLS fibers (other than the BCF92 round 1 mm outer diameter) need for comparison. PMTs (need at both ends of optical fibers, plus cosmic triggers) Two extra Hamamatsu PMT R (single-channel) H6568 (16-channel) H7546 (64-channel) 2 APDs (32-channel) The most critical missing component is the clear fiber. 11/13/2018 Alexandre Dychkant / Arlington LC Workshop

NIU PLANS Comparison of brightness of extruded and cast scintillating strips. Comparison of response of few thin WLS embedded fibers with one thick WLS fiber embedded in the same scintillating strip. Comparison of uniformity response across and along the extruded and cast strip. Comparison of response among different WLS fibers for the same scintillating strip and groove. Comparison of response for extruded and machined groove for the same strip. Measurement of responses for different thickness of scintillating strips using the same WLS fiber. 11/13/2018 Alexandre Dychkant / Arlington LC Workshop
