2. Logging In Log in with your network ID
Wait until the red indicator light on the screen goes off to login.
Your students NEED to know this. If they are having trouble logging in, check this first.

3. Function Keys
¤ Brightness keys (F1, F2)
Increase ( ) or decrease ( ) the brightness of your MacBook Air display.
Exposé All Windows key (F3)
Open Exposé for quick access to all your open windows.
Dashboard key (F4)
Open Dashboard to access your widgets.
Keyboard illumination keys (F5, F6)
Increase (o) or decrease (ø) the brightness of the keyboard illumination.
Media keys (F7, F8, F9)
Rewind (]), play or pause (’), or fast-forward (‘) a song, movie, or slideshow.
Mute key (F10)
Mute the sound coming from the built-in speaker or headphone jack.
Increase (-) or decrease (–) the volume of the sound coming from the built-in speaker or headphone jack.

4. Trackpad
Two-finger scrolling lets you drag to scroll quickly up, down, or sideways in the active window. This option is on by default.
Two-finger pinching lets you zoom in or out on PDFs, images, photos, and more.
Two-finger rotating lets you rotate photos, pages, and more.
Three-finger swiping lets you rapidly page through documents, move to the previous or next photo, and more.

5. Trackpad Other Ways to Use your TrackPad
1. Use one finger to point, tap to click, and drag items on your screen.
2. Drag two fingers up, down, or sideways to scroll in an active window.
3. Use two-finger pinching to zoom in or out on PDFs, images, photos, and more.
4. Use two-finger rotating to rotate photos, pages, and more.
5. Swipe three fingers to quickly page through a document, move to the previous or next photo, and more.
6. Swipe four fingers left or right to cycle between full-screen applications.
7. Swipe left from the right edge to open the Notification Center in Mountain Lion.
8. Swipe up with three fingers to open Mission Control.
9. Pinch close with thumb and three fingers to open Launchpad.

6. Provides a “Quick Launch” for most commonly used apps.
Finder App: Like “Computer” or “Library” on PC
You will NOT save to Finder
Students can Airdrop files to other computers close by. This can be a GREAT tool if used properly. Please make sure to monitor Airdrop. Students that airdrop inappropriate files could lose technology privileges.

7. Launchpad: View all Apps on the Mac
Launchpad: View all Apps on the Mac. May have to swipe to scroll through all of the apps (like iPad).
Mission Control: Show all open windows on your Mac. You can choose an application from here.

8. Safari: Web Browser
System Preferences: You shouldn’t need to access this. Students need to stay out of settings.

9. *****To save to your home directory you must follow these steps!!!!
Stacks: A stack (or folder) can also be added to the dock. Your stack is your home directory.
*****To save to your home directory you must follow these steps!!!!
1. File > Save As
2. Name your document > Where: Choose Desktop
3. File will appear on the desktop when application is closed.
4. Click and drag document to the home directory stack (folder)
5. Delete from the desktop (this takes up space on the machine)
The default saving location is the actual local machine. Do not let student save to the local machine. We will not be able to recover data.

10. PDFs on Macs
PDFs - use Safari - the PDF will open in Preview - File, Save As does not work because it already saves it in your “Downloads” folder.
You can click “Duplicate” then “Save” or “Move To”
Firefox - PDFs will not work - this is a problem with the image
Firefox Fix - go into Firefox, Firefox Menu, Preferences, Applications tab, find all Adobe applications, change Action to “Use Adobe Reader”

11. Mac Only Programs Keynote: Comparable to PowerPoint
Creates STUNNING slideshows
More effects than PowerPoint
Cannot open Keynote files on PC’s.
To convert go to File > Export as PPT.

12. Mac Only Programs Numbers: Comparable to Excel Creates spreadsheets
Cannot open Numbers files on PC’s.
To convert go to File > Export as XLS.

13. Mac Only Programs Pages: Comparable to Word/Publisher
Cannot open Pages files on PC’s.
To convert go to File > Export as PDF.

14. Troubleshooting Mac 101 App Freezes or Locks Up
Fix: Menu Bar-click Apple icon - Click Force Quit OR In the Dock click and hold the icon of the app that is frozen. A menu will pop up. Click Options. Force Quit.
Screen Goes Black
Fix: The computer went to sleep. Click the trackpad or a key to wake.
Can’t Find an App or Document
Fix: Click the Magnifying Glass at the top of the screen to open spotlight. Type in the name of the app or doc you are searching for.
No Internet Connection
Fix: Click on the wifi icon on the top bar.
Make sure new-mac is selected.

15. Cart Maintenance
1. ASSIGN COMPUTERS: Make a list in your gradebook. You must know which student has each mac so that we can account for them. I do not need a copy of the assigned numbers. They should always use the same mac in the cart.
2. Please make sure student SHUT DOWN and not just log off or close the lid. That will keep them signed in and drains battery life.
3. Please put them back in the cart in numerical order.
4. Please plug them all back in prior to returning.
5. Please return the cart by 2:30pm.

16. Shutting Down Click the Apple Icon on the top menu bar.
