A Brief Explanation of Brain Power
2
It was founding father, polymath and super braniac Benjamin Franklin who first popularized the idea of electricity being stored and later reused in a battery. Though he didn’t know about protons and electrons, he reasoned that electricity would move from a positive area, where a large amount of electricity was stored, to a negative location where there was less electricity. The neuron cells in our brain function in a similar way.
3
When the neuron is in a resting state, the inside of the cell is more negatively charged than the outside. +K (Potassium) +Na (Sodium) + + Certain neurotransmitters allow the cell membrane to become permeable, letting in positively charged particles called, ions to the nucleus of the cell. -
4
When enough positively charged ions have entered the nucleus of the cell, an electrical charge is released.
5
The electrical charge then passes along the Axon until it reaches a small gap called a Synapse.
6
Neurotransmitters conduct the electrical impulse from the Axon of one neuron to the Dendrite of the next neuron in the neural network. Some neurotransmitters may act as inhibitors, stopping the signal, while others act to pass the message along.
7
There are billions of Axons, Synapses, and Dendrites, more than there are stars in our Milky Way galaxy, sending electrical impulses through neural networks that comprise our various nervous systems. These pulsing neurons allow us to reach for the stars and within ourselves.
