2 26.2 Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller Captains of Industry
Industry Brings Progress: Industry brought jobs for everyone Products were sold at prices people could afford The Benefits of Bigness: More businesses there are the more will compete This means prices will be lower on their goods The strongest and best business will survive and make money Giving Away Wealth: Carnegie and Rockefeller decided to give their money away They built hospitals, libraries, and gave money for research

3 26.3 Theodore Roosevelt: Trust-Busting President
US past the Sherman Antitrust Act to stop monopolies Breaking a Railroad Trust: Roosevelt hated monopolies and forced railroads to break apart into smaller companies Trust-Busting Expands: Roosevelt found that the oil companies were doing illegal transactions Forced them to separate into smaller companies as well

4 26.4 Robert La Folletta: Fighter for Political Reform
Party Bosses would bribe people to vote for certain candidates They would stuff ballot boxes with fake ballots Because of this La Folletta wanted the power put into the hands of the people This made elections equal for all candidates

5 26.5 Mother Jones: Champion of Workers’ Rights
Child Labor Laws: Children were forced to work in small and dirty conditions because were the only ones that could fit in those places Mother Jones fought for their safety US signed a law against children working Improving Working Conditions: Women’s work days were shorter Assistance if you were injured on the job Better equipment Maternity leaves

John Muir moved to the Yosemite Valley He saw how US was destroying the land and animals there Fought to protect it US created the Yosemite National Park Roosevelt felt the same as Muir so he created many more National Parks

7 26.7 W.E.B. Du Bois: Spokesmen for Equal Rights
Was tired of the way that AA were treated Created the NAACP (The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Their goals were not just for equal treatment, but to better the lives of all through education

8 26.8 Upton Sinclair: Truth Writer
Meatpacking Horrors: Workers were loosing fingers, falling into cookers, and being killed by acid Food was old and mixed with rats, sawdust Nothing was sanitary Book was published and told Americans all about this Safer Food and Drugs: President Roosevelt passed laws to better conditions of packaging companies Meat Inspection Act (meat) Pure Food and Drug Act (canned goods and prescription drugs)

9 26.9 Alice Paul: Heroine of Women’s Rights
The New Suffrage Movement: Alice Paul set up a march to Washington for Women’s Right to Vote Passing the 19th Amendment: Women did a silent protest outside of the White House They were arrested for blocking the side walk Refused to eat in jail (hunger strike) Released and looked at as heroes 19th Amendment was finally passed
