1 What Is A Map? Success criteria I know what a map is.

2 Maps Copy:- Maps - a birds eye view of an area.
Cartography – the art and science of making maps. Cartographer – a person who makes maps.

3 Copy:- All maps must have:- symbols key scale (distance)
compass (direction) title

4 Types of Map Copy the heading above.
As you go through the next few slides make a note of the different types of maps. Discuss when you might use each one.

3D mapping These are essential to modern day life and their use is increasing.

12 GPS (Global Positioning System)
Satellites orbit around our earth in order to give us our precise location in the world

13 SATNAV (Satellite Navigation)
SATNAV – a system of computers and satellites that tell the user exactly where they are or how to get to a place. Uses GPS technology.

14 GIS (Geographic Information System)
GIS – a computer system capable of capturing, storing, analyzing and displaying data which has a geographical (locational) reference. Layers of data can be stored and then analyzed. Without the use of a GIS, the current capabilities of modern digital mapping like Google Earth and SATNAV would not be possible.
