Cold Climates: Boreal lands
Mr Boland Geography
3
Describe this map? What are we looking at? Where is Ireland on this map? What is the green belt surrounding Russia and Canada
4
The green belt going around the top of the earth is known as the Boreal climate.
This is a cold climate. The Tundra is the cold climate on top of the earth.
7
The boreal is mainly a forested area that stretches across land masses of the Northern hemisphere between 50 degrees north and the Artic Circle The boreal has very cold winters, short warm summers and has low levels of precipitation.
9
Climate - Explain the reasons for the weather
Very cold Winters (Mean -29 degrees) Short but warm summers (July= 16 degrees) Low Levels of Precipitation (Less than 400 mm) ?

Climate - Explain the reasons for the weather
In the high latitudes the suns ray heats the earth at a angle. In summer the earth is titled towards the sun giving them long hours of sunlight Polar winds are too cold to hold moisture Very cold Winters (Mean -29 degrees) Short but warm summers (July= 16 degrees) Low Levels of Precipitation (Less than 400 mm)
12
Taiga Forests
13
Huge forest of coniferous (Evergreen pine) forests called Taiga Forests.
A quarter of the worlds forests are located here. They have short growing seasons
14
How do these trees adapt to these winter conditions
17
Thin features offer little resistance to the wind.
Thick bark holds in moisture. Thin leaves stops the foliage from being withered Branches sloping down allow snow slide off. Shallow roots as they cannot penetrate the frozen ground.
18
Wildlife in the boreal- Grizzly Bear
Avoids winters by hibernating. Fur acts as an insulator keeping body warm in winter and cool in summer.
