1 Due to changes in the Energy Budget
Climate change Due to changes in the Energy Budget

2 How do these External forcings affect the energy budget
How do these External forcings affect the energy budget? (and our planet) 1. Changes in solar radiation (hint: which side of the energy budget? Try ‘milankovich cycles’) 2. Changes in the albedo of the atmosphere and planet (hint: you are looking at two processes) 3. Changes in the longwave radiation returned to space (hint: this has something to do with houses and gases) In pairs, research your external forcing (why are they called that?); you will be expected to explain to the class, using diagrams, how they affect the energy budget AND how that may affect the planet.

3 How do these External forcings affect the energy budget
How do these External forcings affect the energy budget? (and our planet) 1. Changes in solar radiation Changes in sunspot activity or the orbital path of the earth may cause there to be more insolation at different times 2. Changes in the albedo of the atmosphere Clouds reflect radiation. A volcanic eruption may increase/decrease the albedo of the atmosphere by reflecting insolation 3. Changes in the longwave radiation returned to space Any increased Greenhouses gases (natural or manmade) will absorb more radiation

4 With reference to the map above, explain the variations in albedo
How might this graph change??

5 Describe and explain the trends in this graph of sunspot activity

6 What’s the difference between global warming, greenhouse effect and enhanced greenhouse effect?
Global warming Refers to the increase in temperature around the world noticed in the last 50 years, especially since 1980 Greenhouse effect Process by which certain gases (water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and CFC’s allow short wave radiation to pass through and heat up the earth but trap longwave radiation on its way out of the atmosphere causing Earth to maintain its heat. Enhanced greenhouse effect Increased amount of green houses gases in the atmosphere as a result of human activity. This is having an impact on atmospheric systems including global warming

7 global climate change Climate change: changes in global patterns of rainfall, temperature, sea level, habitats and incidence of drought, floods and storms resulting from changes in the earths atmosphere caused by the enhanced greenhouse effect Videos: Geographer Online

8 Next Class: 1. Write three bullet points about each type of gas: (pg
Next Class: Write three bullet points about each type of gas: (pg. 54) Water vapour Carbon dioxide Methane CFC’s 2. Why is melting of the permafrost a big problem? 3. What are the main sources of CO2 emissions (graph pg. 55) 4. Who are the main sources of CO2 emissions (table pg. 55) Why does this pose a problem in the future? 6. Which country has had the highest relative increase of carbon emissions?
