Assessing gender issues in local farming system:

Gender survey questionnaire was developed to collected important information needed for gender analysis and for identifying women’s role in farming and marketing. Gender baseline survey was completed. Interview of key informants and group discussions were completed to collect information and gather data on gender issues in agricultural production and marketing, structure and performance of the Women Association.

Both men and women involved in most
farming activities. Women dominant labor force in home gardens. The division of labor between men and women varies by types of crops and farming activities. Men and women have equal role in income generation. Women spend much more time than men on unpaid household works.

Women rarely participate in agricultural training
Women rarely participate in agricultural training and extension activities. Intensified vegetable production/VAT in home gardens may serve as a means to increase participation of women in SANREM training, in addition to income, nutritional and ecological benefits from home gardens. Women’s’ Association, could be a vehicle for group training of women in home garden vegetable production/ VAT
