Discuss how the Design Challenge incorporated STEAM. (Science: We can subject the fishing line to TENSION- a pulling, stretching force. The straw resists compression . When a force is exerted on the straw, which way will it give or move? What determines this? Technology is technology an object, system, or process so this “puppet” is technology a technology. Arts: Is it aesthetically pleasing? Is it interesting and new? Could it represent or express an idea? Math: Is there a relationship between the depth of the holes and the motion? What distance should the placement of holes be? Could you calculate the cost to make this technology? Could you sell these and make a profit? Social Studies: How do inventions and innovations change societies? How did the transition to manufacturing (Industrial Revolution) affect people’s daily lives? How does it change populations?

8 Why STEM or STEAMSS? We need well-educated citizens that can be successful in STEM fields. The current system fails to meet this need. The "T" and "E" in STEM are rarely taught as disciplines in K–12 settings. Because of this, few students understand the way in which these fields benefit our society. Students also do not understand the variety of career opportunities that are available to them. By coordinating science and math courses with technology and engineering courses, students can gain a better understanding of the world they live in. With that understanding comes motivation, and motivation is the key to the student's success and the success of our society -National Science Teachers Association
