Homework. Due next lesson.
Research and create a case study of Holbeck Hall. The case study should include: Setting the scene What happened An explanation of why the hotel slid down the cliff (consider carefully the vocabulary you use) The impact on at least three different stakeholders

Holbeck Hall in Scarborough
The Holbeck Hall Hotel was a cliff top hotel in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. The hotel had scenic views of the sea and surrounding area. On 3 June 1993, a landslide began beneath the hotel. This increased, and finally on 5 June 1993, a day of heavy rain, parts of the building dramatically fell into the sea, making news around the world. The remainder of the building had to be demolished by contractors. Although it was on a clifftop, an information board at the top of the cliff states that the incident was nothing to do with the sea, blaming it on soil creep. So what caused the hotel to plunge into the sea?

Large image Last lesson we studied how destructive waves erode the base of cliffs Cliff collapse can be a rapid and significant problem for some coastal communities. This lesson examines the reasons for rapid cliff collapse and the impact it can have on different stakeholders. The lesson will continue preparation for the Swanage field visit.
7
Coming up All pupils can explain sub aerial processes and mass movement. All pupils can explain the impact of cliff collapse using case studies of Holderness and Barton on Sea All pupils will have prepared to research a case study of Holbeck Hall.

What is happening on the Holderness Coast?
The Holderness Coast is a classic case study of an area of rapid coastal erosion. Learning this case study thoroughly will provide you with the opportunity to gain good marks in an exam. Watch the video and make notes on the following: Where is the Holderness Coast? What is happening to the Holderness Coast? Why is the coast eroding at a rapid pace?
10
Task: What did you find out?
Working in pair: Create a spider diagram to describe and explain the factors that contribute to the rapid erosion of the Holderness Coast. How is the erosion affecting stakeholders?
11
Class feedback How does each of the following contribute to the rapid erosion of the Holderness Coast? Waves Weathering Precipitation Geology Human action What is the impact on named stakeholders?
12
Task: The Holderness Coast
Write up the Holderness Coast as a case study It should include: The reasons that the Holderness Coast is eroding rapidly The impact that this erosion will have on stakeholders. Suggested stakeholder include: Cliff top home owners Local authorities Insurance companies Communities “down drift” of the erosion.
13
Task: The Holderness Coast
Write up the Holderness Coast as a case study The Holderness Coast is eroding quickly for several reasons. Firstly, large waves are constantly attacking the base of the cliff meaning that _____________. The cliffs are made of soft permeable rock which is easy to ___________. When it rains the water _____________ making the cliff _____ so that eventually it _____________. This is called ______. Humans have increased the risk because_____________. The following groups of people are affected:
14
Barton on Sea Study the following sources: do you think Barton on Sea is likely to suffer from rapid coastal erosion? Does it matter? Extra: Read the full story at
15
Barton on Sea Using pages 82 – 83 of the text book create a case study of Barton on Sea. It should include: The reasons that this coast is eroding rapidly The impact that this erosion will have on stakeholders.

Homework. Due next lesson.
Research and create a case study of Holbeck Hall. The case study should include: Setting the scene What happened An explanation of why the hotel slid down the cliff (consider carefully the vocabulary you use) The impact on at least three different stakeholders
17
Finally Create a list of key geographical vocabulary you intend to use in your homework.
