3. Describe two key features of Elizabeth’s religious settlement of 1569
One key feature of Elizabeth's religious settlement was that she tired to create religious harmony in England. Evidence to support this is that Elizabeth’s settlement was called the ‘Middle Way’ as it was a balance of Protestantism and Catholicism. Another key feature of Elizabeth’s religious settlement was that Elizabeth avoided the extremes of Protestantism. Whilst the bible was in English preachers were only allowed to preach with a licence and vestments were maintained for the priests.

The English defeated the Spanish Armada due to the superiority of English tactics.
Evidence to support this is that Lord Howard used fire ships on the night of the 7th August to destroy and disrupt the Spanish fleet. Howard sent eight burning ships into the port of Calais where the Spanish were moored. The Spanish panicked. . Many cut their anchors and set sail regardless of formation. This gave the English a head start in the battle as the Spanish were in disarray. This meant that the English were able to inflict more damage on the Spanish fleet in the battle of Gravelines on the 8th August Therefore the English tactics enabled the English to defeat the Spanish Armanda.
The actions of Drake enabled the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Evidence to support this is that Drake attacked the port of Calais in April 1587 to hinder the Spanish preparations for war. He was able to sail into the port of Cadiz, avoiding the Spanish guns, and attacked the fleet as it sat moored up. This put back the preparations for the war. This meant that the Spanish had a reduced fleet when they set sail for England. Therefore the actions of Drake enabled the English to defeat the Spanish Armada he was able to undermine the Spanish preparations for war.
Finally the weather assisted the English in their defeat of the Spanish Armada in Evidence to support this is that after the battle of Gravelines the wind changed direction. This forced the Spanish up into the North sea. Here the Armada was beset by storms. Unable to return to Spain via the English channel the Armanda was forced north around Scotland and Ireland. This meant that the remainder of the fleet was wrecked on the northern and Atlantic coasts over the winter and only 80 ships made it back to Spain. Therefore the English were able to defeat the Spanish Armada due to the good fortune of the weather.

Changes in farming caused a growth of poverty in England because they increased unemployment. Evidence to support this is that during Elizabeth’s reign farmers applied the process of Enclosure in England. This meant that farms were used to rear sheep rather than produce food. This meant that people lost their jobs as rearing sheep requires less work than growing food so people were laid off and there was a growth of unemployed farm workers moving to the towns. Therefore changes in the farming practices in England led to an increase in poverty.
Furthermore, changes in farming practices led to an increase in poverty in England as they led to an increase in food prices. Evidence to support this is that due to the process of enclosure there was less food produced in in England. This led to the cost of food going up. This meant that people could afford to buy less food. Therefore the new practice of sheep rearing led to increased poverty in England.
However there were other reasons why poverty increased in England under Elizabeth. Evidence to support this is that Henry VIII had closed the monasteries in the 1530s. The monasteries had provided care for the poor and the sick before their closure. This meant that there was less support for those who were out of work and hungry. Therefore there was an increase in poverty under Elizabeth because there was no longer a safety net provided by the monasteries to look after people.
Finally there was a population boom which led to increased poverty in England under Elizabeth. Evidence top support this is that after the Black Death in the population of England halved. However under Elizabeth the population started to recover. The population increased from about 3.5 million to 4.5 million form 1570 – This meant that there was less food and resources to go round. Therefore an increase in the population led to a rise in poverty in England under Elizabeth.
In conclusion, the changes in farming practices were significant in causing an increase in poverty in England. They caused not only an increase in the number of unemployed but also reduced the amount of food available, driving up the prices further. This meant that food was more scarce and more expensive, resulting in an increase in poverty.
