2 Sources of GHG iCAP report estimated 7130 MTE of CO2 annually from south farms. South farms acres, ~3600 are farmed. Modern farming practices, primarily tillage but also annual cropping systems, generate C. Animals ~ 650 cattle, 7500 hogs, 3600 chickens, 45 horses, and 60 sheep. Estimate 44% of GHG emissions from animals and animal products.

3 Dining Services Serve 38,000 meals per day. Sources of GHG emissions.

4 SWAT Team Targets Agriculture
Reduce directly related agricultural emissions by 50% by 2020. Decrease emissions from the farm vehicle fleet by 20% by 2020.

5 SWAT Team Targets Dining
Exceed the state local food procurement standards by purchasing more than 40 percent of food purchases from local sources (<100 miles) by Zero food waste into landfills by 2016 Reduce pre-consumer food waste to >2% of food produced by 2018. Reduce post-consumer food waste to > 0.5% of food served

6 SWAT Team Targets Sequestration & Agriculture
Convert 50 acres of U of I farmland to an agroforestry system by 2020.

7 Needs Better estimates for C emissions from the south farms. Estimates of C sequestration/emissions from farming practices are lacking. Local foods - what really contributes to greenhouse gas emissions? Food processing lab on campus is first step towards significantly increasing the % of local food consumed due to the non-alignment of food production with food consumption on campus.

8 Other strategies Proposed
Anaerobic digester key to reducing agricultural impacts. If that doesn’t happen … Implement a biofuels initiative to convert agricultural biomass into energy production. Large scale composting facility Explore biochar as a means to transform agricultural waste while improving soil productivity and sequestering carbon.
