During the preparation of the Regulation 1143/2014 Eurogroup for Animals has:
lobbied the EU institutions for wildlife-friendly legislation on IAS participated to the consultation process submitted common position papers and documentation

Our wins: Our losses: 50-species caps removed;
regional collaboration for management of IAS native to EU; polluter pays principle; animal welfare considerations (Arts. 17 & 19). Our losses: The Union List of terrestrial vertebrates will be a Negative List; lack of criteria to identify “humane methods” for management and eradication measures ; no reference to funding or strategies for placing confiscated/ unwanted animals.

Eurogroup’s main areas of interest on IAS
Develop, exchange and spread scientifically based best practices for humane management of IAS in Member States (Arts. 17 &19). Control methods should be clearly identified considering the target specificity, effectiveness humaneness, cost, environmental impact, etc.

Develop guidance on strategies for handling confiscated and unwanted pets: no reference to funding or strategies for placing animals are included in Arts

Adopt a positive list of exotic pets in Member States: international pet trade is a main pathway for IAS.
