POP culture in the 70s Television challenges the norm

2 Television before the 70s
Television was just beginning on the 50s. Programming was limited to the three main networks, and was very homogenized. There were family shows that depicted a “normal family”- nuclear family, white, dad goes to work and mom is a perfect home maker. There were very few characters that were not white.

America was also obsessed with Westerns and variety shows Bonanza, Rawhide, Gunsmoke, Roy Rogers Show Ed Sullivan Show, Colgate Comedy Hour, Show of Shows, The Milton Berle Show

4 Television before the 70s
In the 60s, the traditional family show continued, but we also became obsessed with shows that were set in the country with very rural people. The shows made fun of their country ways, but deep down, their country ways were about strong morals. On the other hand, there were a lot of shows about independent young women. The women were starting to have their own ideas and careers, but always in a very innocent way.

5 The seventies Television changed dramatically in the 70s.
Shows began to have non white main characters Julia Room 222 Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids Chico and the Man The Jeffersons Good Times Love Boat Fantasy Island

6 The seventies Miniseries started to tackle longer stories, historical drama and series political and social issues. Roots The Holocaust Centennial A Woman Called Moses The Awakening Land King Benjamin Franklin

Good Times Maude Sesame Street Electric Company (71-77) Holocaust Your assignment is to fins out WHY these shows were so controversial and what they did to change television and society. Powerpoint, 5-10 slides, image on each slide, due Thursday at the beginning of class.
