Chemical Reactions Section 6.1
2
Chemical reactions A chemical reaction is when one or more substances change into different substances. Example iron + sulfur iron (ii) sulfide + energy
3
Go to textbook Page 225 Read page 225 and write definitions for the following into your notes. Chemical Reaction Word Equation Chemical Equation Reactant Product
4
Writing Chemical Equations
Reactants on the left Products on the right Arrow indicates direction in which chemical reaction going (from reactants to products) Can be read as “yields” “forms” or ”produces” + signs are placed between reactants if several reactants are included + signs are placed between products if several products are created
5
Word Equations Example…… Word Equation
Energy + copper (II) carbonate carbon dioxide + copper (II) oxide
6
Chemical Equation Energy + CuSO3 (s) CO2 (g) + CuO (s) State Symbol
Meaning (s) solid (l) liquid (g) gaseous (aq) aqueous (dissolved in water)
7
Example Reaction A piece of zinc metal is placed in a solution of copper sulfate, a fuzzy reddish-brown coating forms on the zinc. Word Equation Zinc + copper sulfate zinc sulfate + copper + energy Chemical Equation Zn (s) + CuSO4 (aq) ZnSO4 (aq) + Cu(s) + energy Label the reactants, products, yield/produces sign
