Introduction to Chemistry
What’s the Matter?
2
What is matter? Matter is everything around us that takes up space and has mass as a solid, liquid or gas
3
Particle Theory of Matter The Four Rules
1 All matter is made up of tiny particles
4
Different substances have different particles
E.g. a recipe for chocolate cake will have different ingredients than one for pizza 2
5
3 Particles are always moving Heat gives energy and speeds things up
6
4 There are attractive forces between particles
Closer equals more attraction 4
7
Physical Change A change in which the composition of a substance is not changed and no new substances are produced (A change is state or form)
8
States of Matter: Physical Change
Is water still water after it freezes, boils and evaporates?
9
Chemical Change A change in the starting substance and the production of one or more new substances
10
Chemical Changes: signs of change
Colour SOLID FORMS Bubbles or Gas Heat Change in odor!!
11
Cooking an egg? Chemical or Physical
12
Challenge List all the changes of matter that you can possibly think of E.g. snow melts, hot dogs cook and water freezes
13
Ticket out the Door! Thinking back to your lab with sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid describe; The states of matter of sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid and carbon dioxide Was this experiment an example of a chemical or physical change and explain why? Write your answer on a cue card and hand it to me before you leave!
