5. So what kind of story is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (1375-1400)?
It’s a ROMANCE—but not in the way we usually think of romance
ROMANCE:
a narrative set in a world of pure wish fulfillment
superhuman heroes fight and almost always conquer the forces of evil
the hero undertakes a hard journey in search of something valuable!

Gawain will have to try to uphold his truth/troth –faith pledged by one’s word and owed to a spouse, a lord, or anyone who puts someone else under obligation
