1. Paraty Geography project write up instructions
During your Geography visit to the old town’s Centro Historico, you collected data to examine the impact of tourism on the town’s people, economy and environment. You will now write up a project (deadline to submit: ) with the following components:
Aim - To assess the impact of tourism on the town of Paraty, its people, economy and environment
Hypothesis – Tourism has had a positive impact on the town of Paraty

2. Methodology – The data you will collect and analyse in the town´s Historic Centre, to test the hypothesis.
You used work booklets to collect data for the following:
Land use map – label and shade a town centre map with information about the different land uses in Paraty’s Historic Centre. How much of this area was specifically dedicated to tourism-related businesses and attractions?
Questionnaire – what did people you spoke to (visitors, residents and business owners) say about how tourism affects them and their lives;
Tourism information – include pamphlets, leaflets etc. collected from tour companies, restaurants and pousadas. What are the range of tourist attractions, activities and services on offer to visitors to the area (not just the town centre)?

3. Your project will have the following sections: Introduction Hypothesis
Methodology
Data Presentation
Data Analysis
Conclusion
Introduction: this should be 2-5 pages and should include:
A cover/title page;
A discussion of the issue to be studied – tourism in Paraty and its impacts;
A discussion of the fieldwork aims: to collect, present and analyse data looking at how Paraty (its people, economy, environment), have been affected by tourism;
A background history of Paraty (independent research needed), including its development and role as a port and its development and role as a tourism centre;
National and state-scale locational maps (with title, scale and North arrow)

4. Write up a neat and detailed version of this table, giving a step by step account of exactly what you did to collect the data, how it was recorded, why we used these methods (justification), problems encountered and limitations of the methods or data we got applying them, and possible improvements.

5. Label and shade (colour code) the copy of this map you were given with the Historic Centre land uses: R

6. Data presentation
Shade in a land use map of Paraty to show how the land and buildings of the Historic Centre are used. You will given these maps when you get there. What does this show about how tourism has affected Paraty?
Use pie charts, bar graphs, tables etc. to show the results of your questionnaire. What does this show about how tourism has affected Paraty? Remember to annotate your charts and graphs to show what you have found.
Add labelled photographs to illustrate the points you are making.
Add tourism pamphlets/adverts/brochure clippings/maps (secondary data)

7. Analysis and Interpretation
Use all of your data (both the primary data you collected and the tourism brochures you collected – secondary data) to discuss and analyse the hypothesis:
“Tourism has had a positive effect on the town of Paraty”.
Use these questions to help you:
> How, and to what extent, is Paraty affected by tourism?
> Has tourism had a positive effect on Paraty – it´s people, economy, environment?
> How do you know this- what does the data tell you?
> What would Paraty be like without its tourist businesses?
Evaluation and conclusion
> Do the findings fit the hypothesis? Summarise them....
> What could you do to make the data collection better next time?
> Can you think of any improvements to this study?
