1 Chemistry 101 Dr. Don DeCoste 3014 Chemistry Annex
2-3 pm Mondays and am Thursdays By appointment Open door policy

2 To Do… http://chem.illinois.edu/clc
Chapters 2 and 3 for discussion tomorrow. Before the next lecture, read Sections 8-1 through 8-6 and begin text hw. Electronic homework (OWL) due Friday (tomorrow) by 10 pm.

3 Particulate Nature of Matter
Atom: smallest part of an element that is still that element (fundamental unit of which elements are composed). Molecule: Two or more atoms joined and acting as a unit. (element or compound)

4 Atomic Element

5 Molecular Elements

6 Compounds

7 Chemical Reaction Electrolysis of water demo

8 Physical Changes

9 Using The Periodic Table
Element: neutral; defined by the number of protons. Ions: positive or negatively charged; comes from a differing number of electrons. Isotopes: atoms of the same element with differing number of neutrons.

10 Forming a Cation

11 Forming an Anion

12 Isotopes of Sodium

13 Using The Periodic Table
Symbol, name, number of protons (all of these are related). Number of electrons in a neutral atom or in a common ion.

14 Using The Periodic Table

15 Using The Periodic Table

16 Using The Periodic Table
Formulas of some ionic compounds. Naming simple compounds.

17 Three Types of Binary Compounds
Metal (Groups 1,2,3; Type I) and nonmetal Simple naming: sodium chloride [NaCl], calcium bromide [CaBr2]. Metal (transition; Type II) and nonmetal Roman numerals: iron(II) oxide [FeO]. Two nonmetals Prefixes: carbon dioxide [CO2].
