Why do we monitor things?
So we knowing what is happening and can act when we need to What do carers want to know and how can technology help them? 24 hour one on one care and supervision is intensive. It sits at one end of the continuum. In what situation do we need to provide such constant monitoring? When the things we need to know about to prevent further harm and achieve a positive outcome change so frequently and need to be acted on in real-time. Fortunately, for most of our lives, we operate at the other end of the continuum - no care or supervision. Caring for a person with frailty, mild to moderate cognitive impairment or dementia puts us somewhere between those two points - we are trying to keep track of some things but we are not always with the person we are caring for. What do we need to know to help us do a good job? How do we know if we are not always there? This presentation discusses the things care givers say they want to know about the person they are caring for - to inform what they need to do or to reduce their anxiety levels - and some of the challenges getting the information. It also discusses situations where technology solutions can help and other situations where their impact is limited.

What do we want to know? What’s happening:
Environment - warm, cold, damp Safe - fire, lost, driving, secure Well - mobile, eating, sleeping, clean, social Happy - interactions with others, not upset When we should act: When something is wrong (lost, cold, hungry, fallen…) Before something goes wrong...early indications But knowing things is difficult if you can’t be there all the time
7
So what are some options?
People: Family, Friends & Neighbours Home visitors & helpers Technology: Streaming security camera & microphone Pendant alarm Fit bit/ smart watch Remote monitoring Some combination of both people and technology Copyright © 2016 BeSure

Things to consider with tech options
Intrusive vs subtle Complex vs simple - install and use Active vs passive What it helps you know What it helps you do How much it costs

BeSure - a new paradigm in monitoring
BeSure is a set of services designed to help vulnerable people (frail elderly, people with dementia, people with autism etc) live independently and you to be sure they are ok. The services are designed around these concepts: Living well inside the home Caregiver/ family notified of potential issues and changes in behavioral patterns that concern physical health and well-being (ADL), such as movement, sleep, showering/ bathing eating regularly and keeping the home temperature in a desirable range. Staying safe within the home Sensing warmth, damp/ humidity with extensions for fire, flood, and unusual activity in non-safe areas around the home and immediate surroundings. “I’m up and about” service in development. Turn taps off remotely. Managing outside the home (2019) Notification to caregivers if there is an unexpected departure from a person’s safe environment, with an option to locate loved ones. * Each service can be delivered independently or in combination with others.
