Ways of shaping sentences
There will always be variation in sentence structure, but overall are the sentences longer or shorter? Simple or complex?
Word choice
Is the writing’s vocabulary simple or complex? Does it use abstract or concrete language? Is the language specific to a discipline or easy enough for laypeople to read?
Voice
Is it written in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person? Is the writer an expert or layperson?
Tone:
What is the writer’s attitude toward the subject matter? Are they humorous or serious? Detached or personal?

Answer the following questions based on the 2 passages we have just read
How would you describe differences in the length and complexity of sentences, in the level of vocabulary, and in the degree of formality?
How do the differences in styles create difference voices, personas, and tones?
Who is the intended audience of each piece? How does the writer hope to surprise the intended audience with something new, challenging, or valuable?
How are the differences in style and content influenced by differences in the rhetorical context?
