3 Tobacco and Marijuana Target: I will be able to list some harmful substances found in tobacco and effects of marijuana use What is in Cigarettes? (and the other places they are found): Acetone – found in nail polish remover Acetic Acid –  found in vinegar and hair dye Pg. 93

4 Ammonia –found in household cleaner and fertilizer
Arsenic – used in rat poison

5 Cyanide – used in paper, textiles, plastics, WWII bombs
Formaldehyde – embalming fluid

6 Lead – used in batteries
Nicotine: a poisonous and highly addictive stimulant found in all tobacco products, which dulls taste buds

7 Tar- a sticky, dark, thick fluid that is formed when tobacco is burned; major cause of lung cancer
Gives cigarettes their flavor Sticks to the airways and lungs, and paralyzes and destroys cilia- tiny hairs that line the respiratory tract and sweeps mucus towards the mouth to be eliminated.

10 Carbon Monoxide- an odorless, tasteless, poisonous gas, produced when tobacco is burned that interferes with the ability of the blood to carry oxygen

12 Marijuana: “Weed”- a natural drug with the active ingredient THC-the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects Hashish: resin from the plant which is solid and smoked in a pipe or boiled and mixed with tobacco

13 Physical and Psychological Effects of Marijuana Use:
Mild hallucinations (changed thinking and delusions) Changes in mood- including Anxiety Memory loss Pain relief Increased Appetite Stimulant- Increased blood pressure and Tachycardia (heart racing) Depressant- Sedation and relaxation

14 Reduced Coordination and slowed reaction time
Lack of motivation, energy, and will power Paranoia- suspicion and mistrust of people or their actions without evidence Respiratory System damage- because smoke is held in the lungs longer and deeper than tobacco smoke Weakened immune system Lowered sperm count and testosterone level Increased risk of stillbirth, spontaneous abortions, birth defects, premature babies, and low birth weight Summary:
