Sprains Stretching or tearing of ligaments.
Most commonly occur to the ankle and wrist.

Strains Stretching or tearing of tendons or muscles
Commonly occur to large muscle groups, dependent upon the type of activity

Fracture Broken bone. Compound fracture (open fracture) bone is forced through the skin Closed Fracture- fracture beneath skin There are several types of fractures that can occur.

Contusion Black and blue, bruise.
Blood vessels broken beneath the skin. Can cause discoloration and inflammation to the bruised area.

Separation Bones forced apart at a joint
Can occur to both ball & socket joints and hinge joints. Results in swelling, pain, discoloration, but joint is NOT dislocated.

Dislocation Bones forced apart at a ball and socket joint (typically) can occur to other joints in the body. Deformity Pain Discoloration Swelling

Amputation Open wound in which a part is completely cut away from the body.

Puncture When a pointed objects enters the body.
Example stepping on a nail, screw, etc.

Avulsion Is a partial tearing away of a body part.
