5 Section 1: What is KIPP? KIPP is a middle school that opened in New York during the mid- 1990s. Must be in 4th grade to be eligible for entry; there are no entrance exams or admissions, students are chosen from a lottery It was designed to help children from poor areas get a better education and more opportunities KIPP is most famous for its mathematics

7 Section 3: Class Divide Graph shows study done by sociologist Karl Alexander on the gain in test score averages per year based on socio-economic level Students from poorer areas made less progress each year than students from high income areas Students from low income areas cannot afford summer school programs Children from lower socio-economic areas have less opportunity to gain and retain knowledge

Because of all of the work she has to do, she doesn’t have enough time to play with friends after school KIPP gives kids from poor areas a chance to get out of poverty, with the cost of free time and a normal childhood 84% of students get to or above their grade level in mathematics 90% of students get scholarships to private or parochial high schools 80% of KIPP graduates go to college
