Rocks and the Rock cycle
Chapter 6 - 1 Rocks and the Rock cycle
2
Rocks Material that makes up the solid part of Earth
Collection of one or more minerals Can be solid organic matter
7
Rock Types Igneous Latin – “from fire” Formed from magma or lava
9
Rock Types Sediment – rock, mineral, or organic matter broken into pieces Sedimentary – rock pieces are cemented together
13
Rock Types Metamorphic – “changed form”
Rock formed from existing rock due to heat or pressure
15
Rock Cycle All 3 forms can turn into another
Much of Earth’s rock has been through the cycle Recycled
17
Bowen’s Reaction Series
Canadian geologist How minerals crystallize in magma Different minerals form at different times during solidification Same order each time
18
Bowen’s reaction series
19
Chemical Stability of Minerals
Measure of the tendency of a chemical compound to maintain it original composition Instead of breaking down to form another chemical Determined by strength of bonds
20
Physical Stability of Rocks
Rocks have weak areas that are determined when they form Joints – weak areas in igneous rocks Forms when rock cools and contracts
21
Physical Stability Uplifted rocks under pressure tend to break
Decrease in pressure allows joints and fractures to open
