How can you use language to present characters?
Knowledge Writers carefully select their vocabulary to make their readers feel a certain way. Writers also choose language devices and figurative language to create reactions and emotions in their readers. Skills: Remind yourself of the language and vocabulary choices that Dahl made to describe characters. Plan a character description, making the same sorts of choices. Understanding: Produce a plan for an extended piece of writing describing a character.

What language choices has Dahl made in the extracts we’ve looked at? Comparisons Alliteration Adjectives Repetition Simile Verb choices We’re going to all write our descriptions about the same man. We’ll look at and discuss an image of this man, before trying to come up with some examples of the language choices (to the left) we might use to describe him. You should consider effective and impressive vocabulary choices whilst trying to come up with examples of these language choices.
