1 SCIENCE FAIR Mini-Lesson #2 Forming A Background Research Plan

2 NOW….. Using the blue folder, read “Background Research Plan”, “Finding Information for Your Research Paper”. And “Bibliography.” Copy and answer the 4 questions below. Title this Science Fair Background Research in your composition book. You will have minutes. What is a background research plan and what are three things it should include? Why should you throw out irrelevant information/questions? In researching the answers to questions, how do you know if it is a good reference? What information should you collect from websites for your bibliography?

3 What is the Background Research Plan?
Essentially, it is a plan that will help you research your scientific question in order to write a formal research paper. The research paper is written BEFORE experimentation to help you formulate a hypothesis which will predict what you believe SHOULD happen during the experiment.

4 What steps should I take to complete the Background Research Plan?
Write out your science fair question as specific as possible, knowing what you will be changing and what you will be measuring 2. Create a list of 3-6 key words relevant to your science fair topic 3. Using your key words, create a list of 10 questions that will help you find information about your topic

5 4. Eliminate any questions that are irrelevant or will not really prove helpful in creating a hypothesis about your experiment 5. RESEARCH and ANSWER your questions using the internet or text sources. Make sure your informational sources are “good references.” 6. Keep a Bibliography log of sources you used to answer your questions and

6 TODAY YOU WILL WORK ON YOUR BACKGROUND RESEARCH PLAN…..
DO ask me if you need help writing a clear and detailed scientific question DO start creating and answering questions using your textbook or laptop DON’T forget to write down bibliography information when you find answers DON’T use references like Wikipedia (anyone can alter it!!) Stick to reliable “good” references Your background research plan (form) is due: A = Thursday October 11, 2018 B = Friday October 12, 2018
