1 Compound Names and Formulas
Chemistry

2 Objectives 1. Name simple ionic and covalent compounds
2. Predict the charge of a transition metal cation in an ionic compound 3. Write chemical formulas for simple ionic compounds Distinguish a covalent compound’s empirical formula from its molecular formula

3 Name simple ionic and covalent compounds
Ionic compounds are formed by strong attractions between cations and anions Cations (+ ion) Use the name of the element in which it was made

4 Anions (- ion) Change the ending of the name to “ide”

5 Naming Ionic Compounds (cont)
Some cation names must show their charge!! If not, FeO and Fe2O3 would have the same name!

6 Transition metals form up to 4 different cations
The name is followed by roman numerals in parentheses. The number equals the ion’s charge

7 For Example… Fe2O3 is made from Fe +3 , so it is named iron (III) oxide. FeO is made from Fe +2 , so it is named iron (II) oxide. Notice: the number does not match the subscript, it matches the superscript(charge)!!

8 Practice Use your Ionic Compound “cheat sheet” to help you
Write formulas for the following ionic compounds 1. lithium oxide 2. beryllium chloride 3. titanium (III) nitride 4. cobalt (III) hydroxide

9 Answers 1. Li2O 2. BeCl2 3. TiN 4. Co(OH)3

10 In-class Assignment Create a Flow Chart that shows the steps used to name ionic compounds. Make sure you name the steps Have the teacher approve it You will need it for Monday’s activity

11 Different rules apply to covalent bonds
Naming Covalent Bonds Different rules apply to covalent bonds Remember: Covalent bond is between nonmetals

12 Numerical prefixes are used to name covalent compounds of two elements
1: Mono- 2: Di- 3: Tri- 4: Tetra- 5: Penta-

13 BF4 Boron Tetrafluoride

14 N2O4 Dinitrogen Tetroxide

15 Practice PCl3 P4O10 SiI4 SeO2 As2O5

16 Phosphorus trichloride Tetraphosphorus decoxide Silicon tetriodide
Answers Phosphorus trichloride Tetraphosphorus decoxide Silicon tetriodide Selenium dioxide Diarsenic pentoxide

17 Empirical Formula The simplest chemical formula of a compound that tells the smallest whole-number ration of atoms in the compound

18 Molecular Formula A chemical formula that reports the actual numbers of atoms in one molecule of a compound.
