Brief Timeline 597 AD – Christianity spreads among Anglo-Saxons
750 AD – Beowulf probably composed 793 AD – Vikings begin raiding Anglo-Saxon countryside 1000 AD – Surviving version of Beowulf written out by monks

The Romans First discover island in 55 BC
They bring technology and medicine to Britain Also brought organized government and roads Abandon the island when Rome is invaded

The Anglos and Saxons 449 AD these two tribes invade Britain
Fought for decades Split the island into 7 sections and called it Anglo-Land (England) Poets told stories about great heroes and their fame Fate and glory were very important Strong connection between Lord and Warrior

Anglo-Saxon Literature
Early writings orally handed down This was done in the mead halls by the warriors and scops. These poems/tales resembled the bleak/violent nature of the early people.

Christianity (Monks) Romans brought Christianity
Monks brought written word and began writing down the stories to preserve them. Infused their own Christian beliefs into the Anglo-Saxon tales.

Danes (Vikings) Invaded and ransacked the north part in 790 AD
Invasion was stopped by powerful king in south. Peace ensued When king died, land became violent again.
