Find a Solution! A solution is a mixture that has the same composition throughout. (evenly mixed) A solution forms when one substance dissolves in another. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Unit 13 Lesson 4 What Are Mixtures and Solutions?
Find a Solution! When a substance dissolves, it breaks into tiny particles that can’t even be seen with a microscope. These particles evenly mix with the other parts of the solution. Not all substances can dissolve. For example, if you put a rock and salt in water, the rock won’t dissolve but the salt will. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company 7

Find a Solution! Many solutions are liquids.
Unit 13 Lesson 4 What Are Mixtures and Solutions? Find a Solution! Many solutions are liquids. Some solutions are gases or solids. For example, air is a solution of tiny particles of nitrogen, oxygen, and other gases.(gas) Brass is a solid solution. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company 8

Separating Mixtures A mixture can be separated. Each component in a mixture keeps most of its physical properties. Physical properties such as color, size, melting point, boiling point, density, and ability to dissolve can be used to separate mixtures. Mixtures can be easy or difficult to separate. When One Isn’t Enough A sieve, or mesh screen, has holes that matter can pass through. Smaller matter passes through the screen while larger matter stays in the sieve. A magnet attracts matter that contains iron, separating it from the other parts of the mixture. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Unit 13 Lesson 4 What Are Mixtures and Solutions?
When One Isn’t Enough Filters have tiny openings, or pores, where only the smallest bits of matter, like water particles, can pass through. Boiling changes a liquid to a gas at the liquid’s boiling point. Evaporation changes a liquid to a gas below the liquid’s boiling point. During boiling and evaporation, liquid particles leave the solution while dissolved particles stay behind. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Proportions and Properties
Unit 13 Lesson 4 What Are Mixtures and Solutions? Proportions and Properties Mixtures can have different properties depending on the amounts of each ingredient. An alloy is a mixture of metals and other substances. Steel is an alloy made from iron and other substances. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company

Proportions and Properties
Unit 13 Lesson 4 What Are Mixtures and Solutions? Proportions and Properties Different substances give steel different properties. Adding chromium makes steel shiny. Metals such as nickel and titanium can keep steel from rusting. Adding carbon can make steel stronger. Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company
