5
Objectives SWBAT classify a mixture as a suspension, colloid or solution. SWBAT identify the properties of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.
6
Classifying Matter Concept Map
Today we will be using a CONCEPT MAP in class to organize our information that you will see during the lesson.
7
A mixture is a combination of two or more substances where there is no chemical combination or reaction.
8
Mixtures combine physically in no specific proportions. They just mix.
Did you know… Mixtures combine physically in no specific proportions. They just mix.
9
Classification of Mixtures
Mixtures can be heterogeneous or homogeneous.
10
What happens when Mixtures are created?
When you create a mixture, there are no new substances formed. Each part of a mixture keeps its own properties.
11
Matter Pure Substances Compounds Elements Mixtures Heterogenous Suspension Homogenous Colloid Solution
12
Matter Everything in the universe is made up of MATTER.
Matter cannot not be created or destroyed by any chemical or physical process
13
Pure Substances Compounds Elements
Chemical combination of two or more atoms Made up of atoms, cannot be further separated by physical or chemical means
14
Mixtures Heterogeneous Homogeneous
Mixture where the substances are not evenly distributed. They usually involve a mixture of a solid in a solid. Mixture where the materials are evenly distributed. Usually involve a mixture of two or more liquids, gases or a solid that dissolves in a liquid
15
Suspension A type of HETEROGENOUS mixture
This type of mixture will create different layers Example:
16
Colloids A type of HOMOGENOUS mixture
This type of mixture has particles within it that WILL scatter light. Example:
17
Solution A type of HOMOGENOUS mixture
Particles, atoms, ions, or compounds that WILL NOT scatter light. Solution have 2 parts a solvent and a solute. Example:

d. There is not enough information to determine this.
Exit Ticket: Mixtures 1. The table below outlines the results of observations made about three different mixtures Given the data above, mixture 3 would be classified as which of the following? Mixture Particles Settle Out Tyndall Effect 1 No Yes 2 3 a. solution b. suspension c. colloid d. There is not enough information to determine this.

For the following diagrams identify what kind of substance it is and then explain why you know this is correct Word Bank: •Element •Compound •Mixture of Elements •Mixture of Compounds •Mixture of Elements & Compounds 2. ____________________ _____________________ ____________________ 5. Which of the above diagrams COULD BE showing a mixture of H2 and C2H4? EXPLAIN.
