Temperature and Heat Kinetic energy is the energy of motion Temperature : a measure of the average amount of kinetic energy amongst the atoms in a substance. more Kinetic Energy -> higher temperature less Kinetic Energy -> lower temperature

7 What are the three different temperature scales?
Fahrenheit is the temperature scale we use for our weather- water freezes at 32.0ºF and boils at ˚F Celsius “centigrade” is the metric scale for measuring temperature- if you live in Europe you’d love it if the temperature was 27 ºC- Water freezes at 0ºC and boils at 100ºC The Kelvin scale the SI base unit for temperature (K)- like the meter is the base unit for length Water freezes 273 K – boils 373 K

8 Equations Needed to Convert from one temperature scale to another!
K = °C + 273 °C = K – 273 °F = (°C  1.8) + 32 °C = ° F – 32 1.8

9 Temperature Conversion PRACTICE
A. How warm would it be in Europe if the temperature was 27.0°C? Convert to Fahrenheit. First choose the third Equation Write it down. Plug the 27 into the spot where there is °C. Put this into your calculator. Record the answer! B. Convert 45 °Celsius to Kelvin First choose the first Equation Write it down. Plug the 45 into the spot where there is °C. Put this into your calculator. Record the answer!
