2 WHAT IS SERVICE-LEARNING?
Links service to academic content and course objectives Involves students in helping to determine and meet real, defined community needs Is reciprocal in nature, benefiting both the student and the community partner Applicable in any discipline so long as it is appropriate to the learning objectives Incorporates critical and reflective thinking

3 SERVICE-LEARNING DEFINED
The Community College National Center for Community Engagement Defines Service-Learning as: “A teaching method which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. Service-Learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility and commitment to the community.”

Brings current community issues into the classroom Creates an engaged classroom Connect you to students Reinvigorate teaching Increased GPA, retention, and completion rates Direct tie to the Critical Core

5 Critical Core Communication: The ability to develop and effectively express in written and oral form ideas that are appropriate to audience and purpose. Critical Thinking: The ability to interpret, analyze, synthesize, or evaluate information, issues and ideas and apply creative thought to formulate an opinion, solve a problem or reach a conclusion Personal Growth & Cultural Literacy The ability to understand and manage self, to function effectively in social and professional environments and to make reasoned judgments based on an understanding of the diversity of the world community. Information Technology & Quantitative Literacy The ability to locate, understand, evaluate, and synthesize, information and data in a technological and data driven society.
