Erosion on the school sidewalk
By: Chloe Bennett and Chelsey Rodriguez
2
What is the problem? Outside the 7th grade pod water is infiltrating under one side of the sidewalk and eroding the other side. The water is also running off and seeping into the school. Where the water is running off to the edge of the sidewalk ------> Where the water is infiltrating and going under the sidewalk ----> The eroded sidewalk
3
Who Is seeing the ProblEm and being affecTEd BY IT?
People who are driving by the school may see this problem. This causes the school to look old. Us students go to this school and we do not like our school not looking nice. The water can also affect the classroom. The water is beginning to seep into the school floors. This can cause mold, attract bacteria, and water bugs, which can cause students to get sick. If the sidewalk continues to be eroded, one day someone could be walking on it and it could suddenly collapse and hurt the person.
4
Is the problem aEsthetic or fuNcTionaL?
The problem is both aesthetic and functional. First, the problem is aesthetic because it makes the school look very unprofessional and old. Next, the problem is functional because the water can easily get into the 7th grade floors and cause problems, especially when it’s raining and can cause the sidewalk to be further eroded. Where the water is hitting the seventh grade classrooms and can possibly infiltrate into the class floors ------> Eroded sidewalk
5
How and what will be needed to fix this?
To fix the issue we will need multiple items. First, we will need to make an infiltration ditch around the areas that the water is infiltrating into the sidewalk. Next, we will need erosion control blankets to increase vegetation. These plants grown with the help of the erosion control blankets will help soak up the runoff. Lastly, we will need a drain so that if all the water is not infiltrated we will have backup. We have chosen these materials because we really think they will do a great job at fixing our school.
6
How much will it cost and how much area needs to be covered?
The area that needs to be covered is approximately yards. This means it will cost a few thousand dollars. This means that with a good team the process will last only a few weeks.
7
What would fixing The problem do for the areas?
Fixing the problem would make the area much nicer, safer, and cleaner. It is important to protect the area so that we have a nicer looking school for guests that are observing the school or just plainly visiting. It is also important to fix this issue because it would not be fair to 7th grade to have water infested classrooms.
8
To sum up In conclusion, this issue needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Although it will not be as cost effective as we wish and will take a few weeks we want our school to be at its best condition it can be. Therefore, we need to fix this problem so that all can enjoy a nice and clean school.
