18.4 Acid-base Titrations By: Chun Yi Ma and Sami Abdelkhaliq
2
18.4.1 Sketch the general shapes of graphs of pH against volume for titrations involving strong and weak acids and bases, and explain their important features.
3
Strong Base and Strong Acid Titration
25 cm3 of 0.1 M HCl titrated by 0.1 M NaOH 25 cm3 of 0.1 M NaOH titrated by 0.1 M HCl
4
Important Features Equivalence point ≠ pH 7
Equivalence Point: the point where there are exactly the same number of moles of acid and base. Equivalence point ≠ pH 7 Buffer region: the region where there is little change to the pH in the solution that is being titrated pKa = pH or pKb = pOH happens in the middle of the buffer region.
5
Weak Acid Titrated by Strong Base
6
Weak Base and Weak Acid 25 cm3 of 0.1 M CH3COH2 titrated by 0.1 M NaOH
25 cm3 of 0.1 M NH3 titrated by 0.1 M HCl

Features of Equivalence Points
Strong base and strong acid titration Equivalence point = 7 Weak acid titrated by a strong base Equivalence point > 7 Weak base titrated by a strong acid Equivalence point < 7
