2. What is Process Safety?
Definition –
“Process Safety is a blend of engineering and management skills focused on preventing catastrophic accidents, particularly explosions, fires, and toxic releases, associated with the use of chemicals and petroleum products.” - Center for Chemical Process Safety
For NOVA Chemicals:
Layers of Protection is the engineering, operating, and maintenance management model being developed for the prevention of Process Safety incidents. This model is based on the concept of multiple lines of defense.

Internal Loss Prevention Standards:
Provides a Risk framework addressing what is and is not acceptable to the organization

Revalidation of the risk assessment
The risk assessment shall be completed whenever there is a change to the facility, operation, or operating environment that is outside of the context of previous risk assessment. Revalidation of the risk assessment shall be done in a period not to exceed 5 years, from the date of the previous assessment.
