THE PHYSIOGRAPHIC REGIONS OF CANADA
A physiographic region is a territory that shares similar natural features. These features can include relief, rock types and water systems. The natural features that are found in each physiographic region have influenced the life of the people that settle there.
4
Which region do we live in???
5
A different perspective…

A few pictures…

The St. Lawrence Lowlands
ST. LAWRENCE LOWLANDS Relief (What is the shape of the land?) Plains (flat) Natural Resources (What do we find there that we can use to make money for the economy?) Agriculture (due to fertile soil) Timber (wood) Minerals Water and River Systems (What are some major bodies of water? How is water used there?) The St. Lawrence River (important for transportation and industries) Climate (Temperature? Precipitation?) Warm summer continental Other info? Best suited for settlement (despite cold winters) Fur trade began here Draw a picture!

The local scenery of the St. Lawrence Lowlands

The Appalachians APPALACHIANS Relief Natural Resources
APPALACHIANS Relief (What is the shape of the land?) Rounded mountains Natural Resources (What do we find there that we can use to make money for the economy?) Trees/Timber Mining (coal & iron) Agriculture (in some areas) Water and River Systems (What are some major bodies of water? How is water used there?) water flows out to the Atlantic Ocean Climate (Temperature? Precipitation?) Warm summer continental Other info? Fur Trade Draw a picture!
10
The Appalachians have many old worn down mountains

A couple more of the Appalachians…

Let’s look at the Canadian Shield
Canadian Shield Relief (What is the shape of the land?) Plateau (rugged terrain) Natural Resources (What do we find there that we can use to make money for the economy?) Trees/Timber Fur bearing animals Water Water and River Systems (What are some major bodies of water? How is water used there?) Many lakes and rivers Climate (Temperature? Precipitation?) Subarctic Other info? Forests + Lakes = Animals Thin rocky soil = can’t grow crops here Draw a picture!

The Hudson Bay Lowlands
Hudson Bay Lowlands Relief (What is the shape of the land?) Wetlands (marshy) Natural Resources (What do we find there that we can use to make money for the economy?) Very few Water and River Systems (What are some major bodies of water? How is water used there?) Water flows out to Hudson Bay Climate (Temperature? Precipitation?) Subarctic Other info? Draw a picture!

Based on your knowledge of the characteristics of the physiographic regions, which region do you think would be best for people to settle in? _______________________________ Why? _____________________________________
